When “Double Jointed” Is More Than Flexibility
For many people living with The Ehlers-Danlos Society recognized connective tissue disorders, the journey to diagnosis is long, exhausting, and filled with phrases like:
“You’re just anxious.”
“You’re too young to hurt this much.”
“You’re just flexible.”
But Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, commonly called EDS, is far more complex than being “bendy”, or hypermobile.
EDS is a group of connective tissue disorders that affect the collagen in the body. Collagen is the structural support system for your joints, skin, blood vessels, fascia, organs, and nervous system. When collagen is altered, the effects can ripple through nearly every body system.
And for many people, those symptoms are hiding in plain sight.
Common Signs and Symptoms of EDS
EDS can look different from person to person. Some individuals experience mild symptoms. Others face debilitating pain, dislocations, neurological symptoms, mobility challenges, or autonomic dysfunction.
Some common signs include:
• Joint hypermobility
• Frequent sprains, subluxations, or dislocations
• Chronic muscle tension and pain
• Clicking or unstable joints
• Soft, stretchy, or fragile skin
• Easy bruising
• Delayed healing
• Chronic fatigue
• Headaches and migraines
• TMJ dysfunction
• Digestive issues
• Dizziness or fainting
• Dysautonomia or POTS symptoms
• Pelvic instability
• Nerve pain or tingling
• Feeling exhausted after “normal” activity
• A lifelong history of being called “clumsy” or “too sensitive”
Many people with EDS also develop secondary conditions involving the nervous system, immune system, vascular system, or mast cells. Mast cells live in connective tissue and release histamines.
Because EDS is still underrecognized in many healthcare settings, patients often spend years to decades searching for answers or a name for their strange symptoms.
Why Proper Diagnosis Matters
A proper diagnosis matters because connective tissue disorders affect how the body responds to stress, exercise, injury, inflammation, surgery, skincare treatments, and even massage pressure.
Without understanding the root issue, people are often pushed into approaches that worsen instability or dysregulate the nervous system further.
Proper diagnosis can help people:
• Understand their body with clarity instead of shame
• Prevent unnecessary injuries
• Access informed medical care
• Learn safer movement strategies
• Support the nervous system appropriately
• Reduce chronic inflammation and tension patterns
• Feel validated after years of dismissal
For many clients, finally hearing “your symptoms make sense” can feel like exhaling after holding their breath for decades.

This is not a “no pain, no gain” environment.
EDS bodies often require precision, listening, adaptability, and respect for the nervous system.
Sometimes healing looks less like forcing and more like finally feeling safe enough to soften.
You Are Not Lazy. You Are Not Broken.
Many people with EDS grow up believing their pain is normal because it has always been there and family members often exhibit similar symptoms.
But chronic pain, repeated injuries, constant exhaustion, and feeling unstable in your own body are not character flaws. They are signals worth listening to.
Awareness creates access.
Access creates support.
And support changes lives.
If you’ve been searching for someone who understands the complexity of living with connective tissue disorders, you are welcome here.
