Today, I found myself sprawled on the edge of the continent, on the stunning island we cherish as the beach, immersing in the wisdom of Alan Watts’ “Out of the Trap” once more. It’s a fantastic read in bite size bursts.
Though I misplaced my bookmark, I embraced spontaneity and flipped open to a random page, only to discover that this was the exact page I was supposed to open to. Fancy that!
It led me to ask this existential question…
“What’s the difference between You and I?”
What actually separates us? I contemplated deeply on this for a while.
I came to the conclusion that it is the identification with “I“, the ego. We begin to separate ourselves from all that is by creating a personification with “I” thoughts. This behavior begins when we are children, is reinforced throughout life and leads us to identify ourselves through separation.
“I” have different thoughts, feelings, lived experiences, memories, and moments than “you“.
“You” see and move through the world differently than “I”.
But, that very distinction is what unifies us.
See, the thing that you and I both have in common is the dividing line between You and I.
You
I
The dividing line belongs to both of us. We both touch this line that separates us… and yet this is where we become one.
Even if we’re moving along the highway in two different cars, we’re still part of the same stream. Even if we’re both seeing different “realities” inside of our “I” perspectives, we’re still alive, at the same time, having these different experiences, this awareness, together.
Removing the invisible barrier of You vs I, helps me to realize there is only – we. We are One consciousness divided into multiple experiences that all touch the same source.
There is no separation. It’s an illusion.
Together, we are already whole. We are ONE.
